Cole Hamilton’s farming career has grown nearly as quickly as the corn and soybeans he plants on his farm in Owensboro, Kentucky. The first-generation farmer began with five acres just six years ago. For the 2023 growing season, he’ll be planting close to 700 acres — and he’ll manage these fields from the cab of a shiny new tractor, his for the season in recognition of being named the Kentucky Young Farmer Association’s Member of the Year.
Cole was awarded this organization’s highest honor in recognition of his exceptional farming management, including record keeping and financial operations, as well as his contributions to his home and community. He was selected by a panel of judges from Agco and Farm Credit Mid-America and by the current president of the Kentucky Young Farmer Association.
The achievement means a lot to Cole, because he credits the organization with providing mentorship and a community that has supported him in his dual roles of farmer and NK Seeds sales representative.
“The Kentucky Young Farmer Association has given me lots of educational opportunities at the local, state and even national level, and it’s allowed me to get to know other row crop farmers and cattle ranchers, too,” says Hamilton. “It’s given me a new perspective and a chance to showcase what I’m doing on my farm and what farmers are doing throughout Daviess County.”
The award was presented at a banquet during the organization’s annual convention, and Cole says he was stunned to hear his name announced for the top honor.
“I considered myself very much the underdog and never thought I’d receive the award,” he recalls. “The announcement was special because my family and girlfriend were there. It was very exciting, and I feel honored and blessed to have been selected.”
Cole is looking forward to hitting the fields in his new tractor, which he says will allow him to be even more productive and efficient this year. “The second-place prize was $500 cash and a Stihl chainsaw, and I was hyped about that, never imagining I’d win the first prize,” he says. “This tractor is very much appreciated and will be put to good use on the farm this season. It’s just so exciting.”
In addition to the top honor, Cole also placed second in the state soybean yield contest with an NK variety. “In my role with NK Seeds, I work with a lot of farmers and retailers, and I want to be able to tell them that I also grow the products I’m recommending to them,” he says.
More than the prize and the recognition, Cole is proud to follow in the footsteps of one of his mentors, who served as the first president of the Kentucky Young Farmer Association. “It’s a big thing for me to continue that legacy,” he says. “I see myself staying involved with this organization for many years to come.”
